Cross-RC Fireside Event: Turkish Coffee Culture

During the Fall quarter 2023, Prof. Topçuoğlu, who is a Faculty Fellow at the International Studies Residential College (ISRC), and MENA LP’s Turkish FLTA, Selin Tanış organized a fireside event to introduce students to Turkish coffee and its place in Turkish culture. The event was held in the North-Mid Quads (NMQ) Kitchen and was open to residents of International Studies and Public Affairs Residential Colleges. Twenty-five students attended the event, where Prof. Topçuoğlu gave a brief presentation on the history of coffee and coffee houses in the Ottoman Empire, and how they spread to Europe and the U.S. After the presentation, students learned how to make Turkish coffee, tried a freshly brewed cup, and also cooked a simple Turkish dessert. We thank ISRC and NMQ for their help in organizing this event.
