We are a unique program
MENA Languages is a unique program for several reasons. In addition to emphasizing a creative, technology-driven teaching environment created to appeal to all different kinds of language learners, we have an
- Instructors offer regular weekly Office Hours for students who have questions about the material being taught or who would like additional oral one-to-one language practice;
- The MENA Languages Program organizes regular Language Tables (3 or 4 per quarter) for all Languages taught in the program. These events are open to all students/faculty/staff of the Northwestern community who want to meet others to practice the language in an informal setting. We usually
serve snacks (often associated with the target culture) and choosespecial topics for conversational and additional language practice. - When available, the department supports special Language Tutors whose task it is to help our students in the program practice their new language in writing, reading, or speaking, regardless of the level. These tutors generally are undergraduate students who are native or
near native speakers of the language and have participated in a short training program to understand the function of an effective tutor. - In addition, Instructors provide Cultural Engagement opportunities throughout the year. These come in for form of hosting a Movie Night, or organizing a meal at a restaurant, or coordinating a volunteer opportunity; and each of which allows the students to explore the particular culture in a different way.
We strongly encourage language learners of all levels to avail themselves of these additional learning opportunities.
