POSTERS OF FAMOUS Africans and people of African descent across Languages

February 26, 2025

postersThis poster exhibition represents student research to recognize the contribution and accomplishments of famous Africans and people of African descent globally.  The posters were created by students studying Arabic, French, Hebrew, Portuguese, Swahili, and Turkish at Northwestern University. The exhibit is viewable in the

Herskovits Library of African Studies until the end of March. The event was a collaboration between the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies, the Institute for the Study of Islamic Thought in Africa (ISITA) and the Council on Language Instruction (CLI) outreach committee.

The students learning Hebrew at Northwestern prepared a series of posters on the history of Ethiopian Jews. Following the poster exhibit,  students were treated to Ethiopian food and a talk by Hadas Daniel, who shared her fascinating and complex life story growing up as an Israeli Ethiopian in Israel, as well as the immigration story of her mother from Ethiopia to Israel. Hadas Daniel' s father is Bedouin and her mother is Ethiopian. Students learned about accepting differences and appreciating our identities and heritage and being proud of it.
